I was in the queue one hot afternoon, at the bus station waiting for the next bus to come. Shortly, an empty bus drove in and we were checked in one after the other. In less than ten minutes, the bus got filled and then we started our journey. As I was caught up in my random thoughts, it occurred to me that I hadn’t seen the driver all along. I didn’t even pay attention to the driver’s corner at all. But that didn’t mean much because of course, whoever was responsible for moving the bus would take me to my destination.
A message was already forming in my heart. Then out of curiosity, I leaned forward and looked towards the driver’s corner in an attempt to at least have a glimpse of who was behind the wheel, but I couldn’t see him from where I was, so I relaxed back in my seat.
Immediately, I got pricked in my heart that I had such trust and confidence in a man whom I could not even see to safely drive me home. I did not question whether he was a competent driver or not. I didn’t bother to check his license or ask about his history of being a driver. I just had full faith that he would do his job.
Then this question popped up in my heart: “Why do you trust a man to drive you safely to your destination but doubt Me to lead your life and bring to pass all that I have promised you?” It was God asking. I felt so guilty. This was a stranger whom I did not even see, a human like me. But we question God and doubt his Word. We don’t trust Him enough that’s why we opt for other options.
I pondered on that for a while. That scenario revealed how we have faith in mortal men more than God. We might say we trust God with our lips, but our actions reveal that we don’t believe what we say. We pray with many options in mind incase one doesn’t work out. The other options most of the times is to resort to the help of men in case God delays in answering.
This lack of total trust is expressed in our daily lives; how we call people relentlessly to remind them of their promise to us but hardly speak to God in prayer and recall His promises. It also reminded me of the days before when I began to doubt if the words He has spoken to me would ever come to pass.
Truly, our trust in God is tested by how we respond to situations. Proverbs 3:5 says trust in the Lord with ALL your heart and lean not on your own understanding. Trusting in God must involve the totality of our heart. We must come to a point where we fully trust God whether we see the signs of answers or not.
That single experience came with silence but great impartation of understanding. Nobody on the bus knew all what was going on but right there, a whole mind shift was happening. God opened my eyes to see what trust truly means and from that very moment, I began to repent of my unbelief and express my trust in God better.
If you can trust a human driver to drive you home safely, how much more God who created man? Humans can fail but God cannot. God can be trusted!
